Stop a Siding Leak Before It Becomes a Bigger Problem

Most homeowners don't notice a siding leak until it shows up somewhere else entirely — a discolored patch on a bedroom wall, a musty smell in the basement, or drywall that's gone soft to the touch. By that point, moisture has often been working its way behind the siding for weeks or months, traveling well beyond the original entry point before it ever becomes visible. That's exactly why patching the visible damage rarely solves anything: the real opening is usually somewhere else along the wall.

Our crews in Old Mystic, CT start every leak call the same way — by tracking the moisture backward until we find where it's actually getting in. More often than not, the culprit is worn flashing near a window or door, a seam where two siding sections don't quite meet, or panels that have shifted loose from the framing underneath. Each of those problems calls for a different fix, so we open up the wall enough to see what's really going on, correct the flashing or gap at its source, and put the siding back so the wall looks untouched once we're finished.

Ignore it long enough and a small leak turns into rotted sheathing, mold behind the walls, and repair bills that dwarf what the original fix would have cost. Old Mystic, CT's weather swings — humid stretches followed by heavy seasonal rain — make this kind of hidden moisture intrusion something we see on houses of every age. After #YEARS years of chasing these leaks down, our team knows to check the same handful of trouble spots first: flashing, panel overlaps, and any place where materials or angles come together, since that's where nearly every leak we've found actually starts.
